Funding

ECA is a 501(c)(3) non profit tax exempt entity.

Most funds are raised by holding charity bazaars selling Ethiopian artisanal products. The founder, Jo Elizabeth Butler, also designs and makes jewelry to sell at bazaars and online at etsy.com/shop/schoolery.

As ECA is a virtual charity there are no overhead or administrative costs. All activities on the ground are carried out by local volunteers and the founder who spends several months every year in Ethiopia to oversee activities.

All proceeds from donations and fundraisers go to support the rural schoolchildren in Sodorre and the AFC children in Addis. ECA has also supported other grassroots efforts such as building a school for autistic children, helping homeless mothers find vocations and helping homeless children in Addis. It also collaborates with the NGO Artist for Charity, which organizes community activities for HIV children in Addis; as well as the Institute for Sustainable Development which sets up organic farms and school feeding programs in Ethiopia.

Donors can contribute to ECA’s overall activities or make a request that contributions go towards specific activities, such as building a classroom, contributing to a child’s college  or university expenses, or vocational training.
